Dear Readers,
In the current issue we would like to introduce the Bergzicht Training Centre in Stellenbosch and give an update on the German-South African Year of Science 2012/13, as well as the German-South African Binational Commission recently held in Berlin. Related to this important bilateral endeavour is a meeting between Humboldt and DAAD Alumni with the German Minister of Education and Research, Prof Dr Schavan in Cape Town.

“Education is the only hope for a better future in Africa: Education and training open the doors for mankind”. This quote by Nelson Mandela is the guiding principle of the non-governmental organisation Bergzicht Training Centre. For the past 20 years, Bergzicht Training has been offering training in home management, education, frail care as well as hospitality and catering to unemployed and unskilled women from disadvantaged communities. Since the early days the organisation has been supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation from Germany.

German-South African Year of Science begins
|
|
Germany and South Africa usher in a new era of cooperation with the official launch of the joint Year of Science on April 16 in Cape Town. The year promises dynamic offerings in both countries covering seven themes and demonstrates the long standing and successful scientific cooperation between the two nations. German Research Minister Schavan and South African Science and Technology Minister Pandor opened the event.

German Education Minister meets DAAD and Humboldt Foundation alumni in South Africa
|
|
From April 13 to 15, an Alumni meeting of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will be held in Cape Town under the motto, “Change by Exchange: Higher Education and Research Transformation in South Africa and Germany”. German Minister for Education and Research, Professor Annette Schavan will be in attendance together with South African Minister for Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor.

Binational Commission enhances German-South African cooperation
|
|
The seventh Germany-South Africa Binational Commission has successfully concluded with the adoption of a joint communiqué in Berlin on May 8, 2012. The Commission was co-chaired by the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, and the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Guido Westerwelle.
