International Chess Tournament at the German School July 19-29

Up to 500 players are expected at the DSK International Chess Open 2013. The participation of international chess stars like the Youth World Champion Alexander Ipatov, promises lots of excitement and should create much awareness and media coverage. For the first time there will be a Grand Master Norm chess tournament in this country and it will happen right here at the German International School in Cape Town! Players can get international norms up to Grand Master level. From 19-29 July players will compete in the following sections: Junior, Open, Prestige (FIDE rated), IM Norm and GM Norm. GM means Grand Master and there was never a specific GM norm tournament in SA before our event. With seven confirmed Grand Masters this tournament will be followed not only nationally but also internationally.

Visa Information System (VIS)

Under the umbrella of the German-South African Year of Science (YoS) 2012/2013, a workshop on data integration technologies for Earth system modeling and resource management was held in Pretoria on April 23, 2013. The workshop was organized by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Council for Geoscience and followed another YoS workshop held in November last year at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany. All together well over sixty participants used the opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

South African Chief Justice visits Germany

EXHIBITION: IN WHOM CAN I STILL TRUST?

Responding to an untold history of persecution The Cape Town Holocaust Centre is bringing to South Africa the exhibition, ‘In Whom Can I Still Trust’, from 13 February until 21 March. It explores the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. The exhibition, redesigned and developed for South Africa, makes use of archive photographs, personal testimonies and video clips and relates the historical narrative to the prejudices still facing homosexuals today. Developed by Dr Klaus Mueller, Berlin, on behalf of IHLIA (Homosexual and Lesbian Archive, Amsterdam), the exhibition highlights the largely untold history of the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. Through additional panels, the exhibition aims to highlight the progress made in ensuring the protection of sexual minorities in South Africa. (ADDENDUM A) The relevance to South Africa Despite South Africa’s Constitution and Bill of Rights, which safeguards the rights of all to be protected against any form of discrimination, homophobia and prejudice towards members of the lesbian and gay community is still widespread in South African society. Attacks on lesbian women and gay men are frequent and school learners, whose sexual orientation is other than heterosexual, encounter terrible prejudice.
