Hans-Jürgen Beerfeltz and Charlize Theron join forces in fighting HIV and AIDS in South Africa

On February 9, Hans-Jürgen Beerfeltz, State Secretary in the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, met Oscar-winning film star Charlize Theron and agreed upon arrangements for joint projects to combat HIV and AIDS in South Africa. For this purpose they signed a joint Letter of Intent together with the Cinema for Peace Foundation.

'Europawärts' program sends Africans to Dresden

On January 12, six young Africans from previously disadvantaged communities will leave for Germany as part of a pilot project. Under the motto ‘Learning through active assistance’ the young people, aged between 20 and 27, will work in NGOs and schools where they will introduce and share their skills in a German context.

German Minister Schavan to meet with South African representatives

German Minister of Research Annette Schavan is travelling to South Africa today where she will meet representatives of science, research, politics and business and discuss how to further enhance cooperation. "The traditionally good cooperation between our countries has developed further under the German-South African Year of Science 2012/2013", the Minister said at the beginning of her trip.

Cécile Verny Quartet gets Maseru into the groove

On August 27, the German-French Cecile Verny Quartet performed in front of roughly 300 guests. Amongst them was King Letsie III and his wife, the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Thomas Thabane and dignitaries from Foreign Missions to Lesotho. The renowned jazz ensemble performed their songs in the 'mountain kingdom' as part of their "Keep Some Secrets Within" tour.

South Africa's top women scientists honoured

The annual Women in Science awards were presented in Centurion on August 24. South African Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor and German researcher Dr. Britta Thege spoke at the occasion, with German Ambassador Horst Freitag presenting special awards at the ceremony.
