DAAD scholarship recipients in Cameroon welcomed by German Ambassador
Germany is a land of ideas, science and thinkers. Year after year, it is becoming increasingly popular among Cameroonian students and scientists to enjoy the benefits of German higher education institutions. The academic cooperation and scientific exchange between Cameroon and Germany is very active and plays an important role in the German-Cameroonian relations.
An important and well-known player in this field in Cameroon is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which supports students and researchers worldwide with funding and advice about studying in Germany.
On March 24, German Ambassador to Cameroon, Reinhard Buchholz, presented 21 Cameroonian DAAD scholarship holders their certificates at a reception at his residence. The students and faculty from various disciplines have been invited to study, teach and conduct research in Germany, mainly in the fields of linguistics, science and cultural history.
The DAAD lecturer and Director of the DAAD Information Centre Katja Buchecker emphasized in her welcome speech, the important contribution that Cameroonian academics have made at German universities. She noted that they form the largest group of students and scholars from sub-Saharan Africa in Germany. More than 6,000 Cameroonians currently study and conduct research at German universities. Ambassador Buchholz wished the young scientists every success for their stays in Germany.
The programs of the DAAD in Cameroon are primarily targeted at graduate students and graduate researchers. Particularly noteworthy, therefore, the promotion of Master's courses in "public policy and good governance and conflict studies and management" is: make the grants for this, the organization of each complete Master programs in Germany.
In 2009, Cameroon was selected to host a special information center, one of only three in sub-Saharan Africa. It has moved into its own premises on the campus of the University of Yaoundé I this past year. The other two Information Centres are located in Ghana and South Africa.
One of the main projects of the DAAD IC Yaoundé is the promotion of a partnership between the Universities of Bremen and Ngaoundere, which are establishing a joint Master's program in environmental sciences. In addition to this, the DAAD presents the event series "Study in Germany" in cooperation with the German Embassy, the Goethe-Institut Yaoundé, the alumni network KBK (Coordination Office Cameroon) and the Returning Experts Programme.
