International climate diplomacy

Germany has long played an active and important role in international climate protection. From hosting ministers meetings or preliminary negotiations, participating in pivotal international conferences, to introducing a resolution in the UN Secutrity Council acknowledging the threat climate change poses for global security, Germany is in the forefront of advancing the protection of the earth’s environment and its populations.

The Climate Change Conference in Durban (COP 17/CMP 7) paved the way for a legally-binding climate agreement between all countries following long and tough negotiations. From the close of this deal on December 11, 2011, the world turned its eyes to Qatar and COP18 at the end of 2012. Germany, a respected leader in international climate diplomacy, will continue to pursue completion of the Durban package and for limiting climate change to the 2 degree threshold.

The European Union and climate change

The European Union (EU) takes a leading role globally in the fight against climate change. Germany is an active participant in this group. The EU's goal at COP17 is to ensure that an abmitious and legally binding global treaty to keep global warming below 2°C is agreed upon at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban.

The International Climate Initiative

The International Climate Initiative (ICI) has been financing climate protection projects in developing and newly industrialising countries since 2008. The ICI receives funding from emissions trading, representing an innovative financing mechanism to support partner countries in the area of climate protection. Through the ICI, the German Environment Ministry finances projects that reduce emissions and address adaptation to the consequences of climate change.
