Visit of Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Ralf Brauksiepe

Parliamentary State Secretary (PStS) Dr Ralf Brauksiepe visited South Africa during August 25-26 2010. During his stay he met the German team that participated in the Soccer World Cup for persons with intellectual disabilities, which took place in Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo from August 23 until September 12, 2010.

He further visited a project run by the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) in Musina that deals with the precarious labour market in the border region between RSA and ZIM. The project operates in Musina (RSA) and Beitbridge (ZIM) and aims at providing Zimbabwean migrant workers a safe entry to South Africa and ensuring that employment at local farms (short as well as long-term) is in accordance with South African working regulations and ILO standards.

The managers of both parts of the project gave StS Brauksiepe insight into their challenging work and into the dynamics of the labour market in southern Africa. The gap between the two extremes - of a widely non-regulated labour market that is dominated by non-qualified workers and an industrially developed labour market in the economic centres - is still difficult to overcome.
