This reform project is one of the main focuses of the South African health policy. Ms Ulla Schmidt, MP and long-standing Minister of Health participated on behalf of Germany.

Mr Tebogo Phadu, in charge of policy planning within the ANC and member of the commission for developing a national healthcare system in South Africa was her local counterpart.

The forum was facilitated by the organizer Monika M Sommer herself and witnessed a lively discussion rich in depth knowledge with South African and German members of politics, economy, trade unions and science contributing sound questions and comments.

As the plans for the introduction of the national health insurance had not been publicized, the forum that was conducted in accordance to the Chatham-Rules* was in ideal place for this debate.
